Pancreatic cancer is a harsh form of cancer that is incredibly difficult to diagnose and even harder to cure. As pancreatic cancer has similar symptoms to many other diseases, it is usually not diagnosed until it is in an advanced stage. Pancreatic cancer is one of the least common forms of cancer but it does have one of the highest fatality rates in the UK. Due to this it is important to understand the signs and symptoms associated with the disease. Some of the most common are weight loss pancreatic cancer symptoms.

How does Weight Loss relate to Pancreatic Cancer?

Weight loss can either be as a result of the cancer itself or as a result of the pancreatic cancer treatments.  Weight loss caused by the cancer itself can be dramatic as it affects the way that proteins and calories are absorbed by the body.  Tumour related weight loss can lead the body to break down protein in the muscles, burn more calories than it usually would and decrease appetite.  This is caused by the tumours releasing cytokines into the blood which change the way the body absorbs nutrients.  Controlling the growth rate of a tumour can help to decrease the rate at which weight is lost.

The weight loss pancreatic cancer symptoms include smaller muscles, a thinner body and fatigue.  These can all have a significant impact on a person’s daily life including how well they respond to treatment, how well they fight infection and how well they can function in their daily activities.  Though researchers are currently gaining more insight into the weight loss pancreatic cancer symptoms there is still a lot more research needed before a way to control or stop the symptoms is available.

Steps to Take to Minimise the Weight Loss Pancreatic Cancer Symptoms

Although weight loss is a direct symptom of pancreatic cancer there are some steps that you can take to minimise the amount of weight you lose.  These include:

  • Take plenty of rest
  • Consult with a dietician or nutritionist
  • Plan to eat between five and six times a day, including snacks between meals
  • Try not to consume food or drinks with little nutritional value such as soda and instead eat foods rich in calories
  • Avoid any foods that may cause diarrhoea
  • Ensure you stay fully hydrated
  • Speak to your GP about nutritional supplements and consider taking pancreatic enzymes
  • Aim to include small amounts of physical activity into your day – this can increase the appetite and decrease fatigue.

 

Although pancreatic cancer is a debilitating disease it can be cured if it is caught early enough.  If you are experiencing any of the above weight loss pancreatic cancer symptoms or if you think that you may have pancreatic cancer it is important to speak to your GP as soon as possible.  The sooner they can conduct tests and diagnose what is causing the symptoms, the more chance you have of successful treatment.
